First-timers Heat Up the National College Comedy Competition!

St. Cloud State is new to NCCC this year, but their comics are already top notch!  The Quarry in Atwood was packed with students who were treated to a very funny show by comics of all levels of experience and all different styles.  Congrats to the St. Cloud team!  Next up, St. Cloud will compete against the University of Minnesota on March 21st at House of Comedy.

Emerson’s still got it.

Awesome event tonight at Emerson College in downtown Boston! Students chose comedy over the Super Bowl and packed The Cabaret to cheer on their friends. We had over 20 students show up to perform with some really impressive talent. Super fun. Congrats to the Emerson Comedy Team!

Despite all that snow, Boston College came in HOT!!!

Wow, awesome event at Boston College. Nearly 400 students came out on an icy night to support college comedy. We had 20 performers try out for the team – with just eight advancing. The competition was stiff and all performers were solid. Next up, BC will compete against Emerson at the Regional Rivals on 3/30 at Mottley’s!

Rooftop would like to extend many thanks to Max “Production Intern for the month of July” Fox for spending part of his summer working for us.

Max is a great comic and a great friend of ours. Originally from New York City and currently living in Boston where he attends Emerson College, Max was a stand out performer at the 2009 National College Comedy Competition. He was so good, in fact, we asked him to come San Francisco last summer to participate in our first ever “Talent Institute,” a month long intensive program providing the nation’s most promising college comedians the training and support they need to launch their entertainment careers. Five students were selected through a highly competitive application process that drew hundreds of applicants from around the country; the Max was one of them.

When Max asked to join our production team this summer, we were honored to oblige. He spent the month of July analyzing and producing content for the site, enjoying the delectable $5 all you can eat buffet at the Gold Club, and being his delightful jackass self.

Max has a bright future in comedy. We’re very grateful that he shared his many talents with us this summer. Good luck, Maxy!

Today marks the close of the 3rd Annual National College Comedy Competition (NCCC) presented by TBS, with the official crowning of Calvin Cole from University of Florida as America’s Funniest College Student. The competition kicked off in January with an on-campus talent search at 32 universities across the country. Comedy Teams then battled their way through a series of live events and online elimination rounds in tournament-style match-ups.

PSU vs Temple Regional Rival Match Results

Last night we held the Regional Rival Match between Penn State and Temple. Helium Comedy Club was packed with fans of the competing comics with about 200 audience members filling the seats! The energy was high and the rivalry fierce as both teams of eight took the stage.  Philadelphia comic Pat House, emcee of the evening, kept the show moving and the crowd roaring as each performer gave their three minute set. After watching each comic judges Ben Maher (Founder of the Philadelphia Sketchfest), David James (2006 Philly’s Funniest Winner), and Jeff Lewandowski (Talent Scout, Helium Comedy Club) picked the four members of each team that will now make up the starting lineup for their schools.

PSU Starting Line-up: Daniello Sepe, Kyle Dodson, Jason Ho, Matt Rain

Temple Starting Line-up: Richard Sheppard, Harrison Lampert, Stephen Sudia, Aaron Miller

Finally we finished off the night with the hilarious Comics’ Challenge, where each member of the Starting Line-up performed a one-minute bit based on TBS’ show premiering June 7, Neighbors from Hell.

Keep following as these teams ramp up their game in an attempt to win themselves a spot at the Aspen Festival!  Check out the Tournament Bracket and keep updated  on the NCCC:

Welcome MSU and Western!
