We put up a new video player on rooftopcomedy.com last week. I’m not bragging or anything, but it’s better than youtube’s and collegehumor’s …and funnyordie’s. It is still based on Flash 9 and doesn’t use the new HD format (yet), but everything else about it is an upgrade from our previous player. For instance:

Built-in sharing for facebook, myspace, stumbleupon, and a few other social networking services that the trendy people are using these days …or so I’ve heard.

Easily embeddable on other sites. IOTW, you can now use our player to show off your favorite stand-up comedy on your own website or MySpace page. Example:

Of course, the stand-up comedians will find this most useful for showcasing themselves. The only catch... we show a small “RooftopComedy” logo at the bottom right of the screen. Check it out and let us know how it works for you or if you’d like to see see anything done differently.

Continuous playback. If you don’t do anything after the video plays it will automatically play another clip after a few seconds. This is an experimental feature, and we’d like some feedback on it. Consider this a first step towards the “Rooftop Comedy TV Channel – Funny stuff that Comedy Central’s over active beeper couldn’t handle”.

But the most important new feature is that if you change the volume, it remembers your settings on the next video that you watch. I really hated that on the old player, because while developing these players I end up hearing the same clip a million times. I can recite Kristin Linder’s Healthcare ATM bit entirely from memory. Luckily, the mute button started working before that bit was no longer funny to me.

For the true geeks out there, this new player is built using Flex Builder 3, but as an Action Script 3 only project. No Flex components were used in order to keep the SWF file size down. Flex rocks …but not so much when you’re serving out bandwidth at RooftopComedy levels, but with a RooftopComedy budget. Besides, not everyone has broadband access in West Virginia yet and they probably like watching Andi Smith’s bit about them over and over again.

I was going to include another ten pages worth of technical specifications and notes, but the editorial team asked that I save that for another day. Something about blog posts needing to be semi-interesting or something.
