Lachlan Patterson Interview

Lachlan Patterson hails from Vancouver, Canada, which bodes well for him, as Canada has proved exceptionally adept at churning out talented comics. He has performed on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, as well as at the Vancouver Comedy Festival and Rooftop’s own Aspen Festival.

Now, Rooftop is helping Patterson with a new milestone: recording artist. Patterson’s CD, Jokes To Make Love To will be released Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 on iTunes, Amazon, and through RooftopComedy.com

Patterson and Rooftop interviewer Nathan Timmel kept opposite schedules, but were able to improvise a chat via email.

NT: How long have you been performing stand up comedy?

LP: It was ‘94, amateur night at the biggest comedy club in my hometown. I had no idea what I was doing. Packed the place with my friends, inhaled a six pack of Labatt’s Genuine Draft and began jumping around in bright red long johns. My topics were female bodybuilders, urinals, and get rich quick celebrity Tom Vu. It was terrible. I’m embarrassed even mentioning it. However, the Tom Vu bit was gold.

NT: Do you enjoy Los Angeles, or do you ever long to return to the Great White North?

LP: I love Canada and wish I could perform there more often. My family lives on Pender Island near Victoria and I try and visit as much as I can. Vancouver is still my favorite comedy scene of any city I’ve ever visited. I’d mention names but the list is too long.

NT: Do you feel being a Canadian in America helps or hurts you, or doesn’t it matter in the least?

LP: Doesn’t matter. I always ask the MC to mention that I’m from Vancouver, Canada because I love the city so much, but it has no bearing on how the crowd reacts. After the lights go down people don’t care where you’re from, they just want to laugh.

NT: What was the concept behind the new CD?

LP: The CD is called “Jokes To Make Love To”. It’s a silly title but I think it describes my style. Light some candles and run a hot bath before you push play.

NT: What kind of audio equipment did you set up for the recording?

LP: I don’t know much about that. I had a microphone and a stool. I think the microphone said Samson on it. It had a wire attached to it that went into the wall behind me. It was a brick wall.

NT: Everyone at Rooftop loves the cover; how did you come up with it?

LP: We shot the cover photo at Studio De Carlos with my buddy and sick Danish photographer Thomas Hjorth in Hollywood. We had some beer and an international DJ showed up. We took goofy pics that ended up working for the Cover. I never take anything too serious, so the sillier the better. I collaborated with Rooftops’ designer, Andi Smith who and added her personal kiss to the graphics giving the whole project a sexy lounge feel.

NT: How would you describe your humor to someone who has never seen you perform?

LP: Lately I’ve been trying to write about what a good person I’ve become. Rescuing animals, saving the environment; I’ve even started working with children, they do the work, I just boss them around.
