LOST “THE END” RECAP (S06E17/18)
When I first found out that the title of the final episode of LOST was “The End” I thought it was funny, but kind of stupid. After watching the episode, I find it brilliant.
Because with how it ends, there will never be a “the end” for LOST.
All cheesiness aside, I’ve never felt so sad, happy, and confused at the same time (well, there was one other time, but I won’t get into that). I’m still trying to wrap my head around what happened exactly and I’m trying to figure out if I liked the finale or loved it. (Fine, I’ll tell you. I was caught masturbating by my dog, and he sort of smiled. It was weird. That’s what I didn’t want to get in to it. Next time, keep your curiosity to yourself, asshole).
Let’s do a quick recap: Jack, Flocke, and Desmond go to the light on the island, there, they lower Desmond in. He proceeds to turn off the light, thinking it’ll take him home but instead it starts to sink the island. Flock was right.
The island starts to shake, Hurley is about to get killed by a tree when Ben shoves him out of the way. This made me so happy. Ben, coming full circle, and sacrificing himself. Luckily, he did not die, but instead just got trapped for a few moments.
But what Flocke didn’t know is that turning off the light would make him mortal. So he and Jack get in an epic cliff-side fight. Flocke stabs Jack in the side and as he is about to finish him off, Kate shoots and kills Flocke.
Jack now realizes he has to turn the light back on, so he goes to the cave and turns it on. Before he does that, he gives Hurley the power to watch the island. I knew it! Hurley deserved to control the island. Hurley is the shit. He loves chicken and banging chicks.
Meanwhile, Lapidus is found alive and Miles and Richard take him to the plane. He gets it started and they are leaving as Claire, Kate, and Sawyer arrive. They get on and take off.
So Jack goes back to the bamboo forest, holding himself, slowly dying. He lies down. Vincent, the dog, runs and joins him. Jack looks up to see the plane fly over him. He smiles, closes his eyes, and dies.
Meanwhile, in the flash-sideways, everyone starts to remember everything. Jack is the final person to remember and he does this at a church, where Desmond took his father’s body. Everyone is meeting at the church, but Jack has no idea why. There, he finds his father, standing up and talking. He asks how he’s there and his father responds with the same question. Jack is dead. Everyone is dead.
According to Jack’s father Christian, they all made this place so they could find one another and move on, to where, we aren’t told. It depends what you believe, some say Heaven, others say IHOP for some cheesecake pancakes. So everyone meets up in the chapel, hugs, smiles, sits down, and everything turns white.
The end.
Fuck no, it ain’t! What the hell just happened? What were we watching all season? From what I believe (and by that I mean what I’ve read online and my friends think) the flash-sideways was purgatory, a place for all the survivors to go once they died. But everyone died at different times. Jack died for real on the island. Everything on the island was real. Kate, Sawyer, and Claire went home and lived full lives and died later. Same with Desmond. But once they all died, they had this place to meet up and when they were ready, they could leave together.
And there it is, that happy, sad, angry, upset, confused feeling. I’m not sure what to think. I think the ending was emotionally satisfying. The characters were wrapped up nicely and it was very emotional. But when it comes to the island, what it all meant, the Dharma Initiative and all that science stuff? Well, there was no satisfying end. Part of me is okay with that, but the other part of me is upset that LOST is now being talked about strictly by the flash-sideways, a season six storytelling device, and not the series as a whole. I wanted more explanation, but I know well enough that the more they explained, the more people would either a) want to know more or b) call bullshit.
Not everyone will like the finale. I said to many people before it ended that LOST was unique in the sense that it was loved by scientific people and religious people. I had a feeling the ending would go with one side, and it went with the religious side. So now, science people are angry. But let’s be honest: science people would have been pissed had they tried to explain everything with science. Just as religious people would have gotten angry had they ignored the religious stuff.
So no, it is not “the end.” LOST will go on for a long time, people hashing out old and new theories, fighting over what the hell made the smoke monster, why Kate suddenly got hotter in the finale than usual (seriously, my average length of boner, or ALB, for the finale was 35.6 seconds compared to the rest of the season, a resoundingly low 14.9 seconds. Figure it out, science nerds!) But I can happily say it did not play it safe. I love that there are people who hate it and those who love it. I love that there is even more debate now than normal. I am mad at the ending for ignoring so many questions and mysteries, but also love it for being fucking crazy.
And if you don’t like that, then go watch the Friends finale.
